Working on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, our project management team led the reinstatement of approximately 460 m of Highway 5 back to pre-flooding event conditions following the November 2021 atmospheric river between Hope and Merritt, BC.
The scope of work included improving the safety and mobility of the Coquihalla highway from accelerated design to construction, Indigenous consultation with over 20 First Nations, environmental and hydrotechnical assessments, as well as Enbridge pipeline coordination and permitting for the reinstatement of the washed-out southbound lanes.
This project was delivered on an accelerated timeline, requiring the project team to condense the design and procurement schedule to meet a critical construction window that allowed construction to begin before winter. This was accomplished in under eight months. Project risk was further mitigated by facilitating a constructability review with special considerations to current market trends with labour and material cost increases, impacts of an accelerated design and hydrotechnical analysis for potential future weather-related events.
